Accrediting Agencies Recognized by the U.S. Dept. of Education

The U.S. Department of Education, along with the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), reviews accrediting agencies to make sure they're doing their job. The Department of Education recognizes the following national and regional institutional accreditation agencies (listed here along with the kinds of organizations or states in which they accredit):

  • Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology: Degree & non-degree schools, trade & professional programs
  • Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training: Occupational associate degree programs & continuing education
  • Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools: Certificate programs to master's degrees
  • Council on Occupational Education: Non-degree, associate degree, career, & technical education
  • Distance Education and Training Council, Accrediting Commission: Distance education, including doctoral degree programs
